The benefits of real wood flooring
The look and feel
Wooden floors add a natural charm to any room. There are endless possibilities in choosing a design to complement your current or proposed decor. The natural grains and colour of the wood make every floor completely unique.
Durability and longevity
Wooden flooring is more durable and lasts longer than ever before with the technology of modern protective finishes. Because of its longevity and durability, hardwood flooring possibly provides the best long-term value-for-money option compared to other types of flooring.
Temperature and sound regulator
Wood is an insulator, helping to keep heat in when it is cold and the house cool when it is hot. Wood is also a fibrous material and it absorbs sound.
Safety
Wood will absorb impact better than other types of hard flooring because of its natural softness, making it potentially safer for places with children and babies
Renovation
The ability to renovate by sanding and re-sealing makes a wood floor a lifetime investment, however regular maintenance should avoid the need to ever sand and seal the floor.
Types of real wood floors - Solid or Engineered?
Solid wood flooring is exactly what the name implies: a solid piece of wood from top to bottom. The thickness of solid wood flooring can vary, but one of the benefits of solid wood flooring is that it can be sanded and refinished several times. Solid wood floors can be nailed to a wood subfloor, or adhered to most substrates.
Engineered wood floors are real wood floors that are manufactured with multiple layers, the top wear layer being the hardwood species and colour of your choice. The underlying base layers see may be a more economical species of real wood or a very high density fibeboard.
This layering method of manufacture makes the flooring very dimensionally stable which means that the wood will expand and contract less than solid wood flooring during fluctuations of humidity and temperature.
Engineered floors can be adhered to the subfloor or layed as a floating floor, planks being connected with a locking system and laid over a cushioning underlay, speeding up the installation process. Dependant upon the thickness of the top wear layer engineered floors may be able to be sanded and refinished, though not as often as solid wood floors. All wood floors should beregularly maintained.
The finished appearance of your floor will be dependent upon the wood species, the grade of wood chosen, the plank dimensions and the laying style eg. planked or herringbone parquet. Most wood floors are available factory-finished with colours and sheen levels to suit your personal preferences.
